The workflow that changes learning outcomes is spaced retrieval — you engage with the material multiple times over increasing intervals, and the engagement is active recall, not passive re-reading. This four-step workflow builds that pattern for a course module: notes for later, quiz yourself now, drill the specific spots you missed, add to your running exam-prep index. The whole thing takes an hour per module and, if you run it consistently, produces exam-ready understanding without cramming.
Convert lecture into structured notes
Goal: Notes designed for future you to re-engage, not present you to feel productive.
Here is the lecture transcript / slides / textbook chapter for [Module N of Course X] [paste]. Convert this into study notes structured as: (1) three-sentence overview of the module's core claim, (2) key concepts (max 8) with a one-sentence definition each, (3) worked examples (2-3) showing the concept applied, (4) the specific piece of prior knowledge this builds on (link to prior module), (5) how this connects to what's coming next. Use active voice; do not summarize the professor's tangents.
Self-quiz for active recall
Goal: Immediately after Step 1, engage the material actively so it consolidates.
Based on the notes above, generate a 10-question quiz that tests understanding, not memorization. Mix: 3 concept-explanation questions, 4 applied problems, 2 'why does this matter' questions, 1 wrong-answer analysis (present a common wrong answer, ask why it's wrong). Provide the answers, but hide them until I click a divider — I want to attempt the questions first.
Drill the specific ones you missed
Goal: Do not move on from weak-spot concepts until you can produce them from cold recall.
I missed questions [4, 7, 10]. For each: (a) what specifically did I get wrong, (b) what's the underlying misconception, (c) two more practice problems that isolate the specific misconception so I can drill it, (d) a memory anchor (mnemonic, worked-example, analogy) that helps the correct pattern stick.
Add to running exam-prep index
Goal: Each module contributes a specific entry to a growing exam-prep artifact you can drill from before the exam.
Add this module's material to my running Stats 250 exam-prep index. The entry should include: (a) the module's 3-sentence overview from Step 1, (b) the 3 concepts I got wrong on the quiz and their memory anchors, (c) the connection to prior and next modules, (d) two 'quick-hit' practice problems I can drill in 5 minutes.
Handoff: The exam-prep index lives in a LADLE Project. Each module adds ~1 page to it. Before the exam, you'll have a 20-30 page comprehensive review that you built continuously, not crammed. Drill it in one sitting three days before, then again the day before.
